The dreamy outcomes of the exotic Bandhani

Bandhani or Bandhni or Bandhej, a highly-skilled process involving the Tie-Dye method, has the base fabric first tied at several points by threads and then the threads are dyed. The manner in which the tying is done decides the resulting pattern, which could be Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali or Shikari. Patterns which emerge are generally dots, strips, waves or squares. Fabrics like Bandhani sarees are made of cotton, silk, crepe, georgette, chiffon, satin, supernet or such. Dark Colours employed for dyeing the ‘Bandhini’ could be natural or artificial. Principally applied colours being red, green, blue, black or yellow, the background is generally red or black.

The variety in Bandhani sarees
The Khatri community of Kutch in Gujarat is known to excel in this art. Works like, tying of thousands of miniscule knots on the Bhandhani fabric that spread and form exquisite designs on opening after the dyeing process, speak volumes for their skill. Bhuj, Mandvi in Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat, India, are known for their individual varieties in Bhandhani sarees. Rajasthan again has its own style of Bandhani, unique to its region. Designs and colours differ, with significance attached to certain colours. Red conveys a newly married bride, yellow for a recently become mother, are typical examples. There is a special attraction to the Leheria Bandhej sarees in the Bandhini range known for their unique wave designs, evolving from a brilliant exercise of the tie and dye art that has created waves in the fashion world for the simplicity and appealing look on plain coloured fabrics. Leheria work is done on silk or cotton fabric and on long and broad canvases like turbans and sarees.

Captivating process of the Bandhani saris
The process of getting the unique Leheria saree involves rolling the fabric and tying resists at various spots on the cloth and then rolled diagonally from one corner to the opposite selvage. This rolled fabric is then dyed according to the usual tie and dye process in bright colours. When the fabric is unfolded after dyeing, it leaves a lot of stripes or other shapes at intervals across the fabric in a design. Several tie and dye processes are undergone if required, to create a myriad of colourful stripes across the fabric length. Indigo is used in the last few stages of the process. Mothara is a special ‘lentil design’, popular and achieved by the re-rolling of the unfolded first stage in the opposite direction and the resist tied at the diagonal end and repeating the dye process. The resulting checkered design has un-dyed areas at regular intervals which are the size of a lentil.

Pochampally silk saree - Devotion and dedication undimmed over time

Pochampally, in Telangana, India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand of sarees, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The exquisite finish of the saree comes through the dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique.
The special technique of the Pochampally silk weave
The Ikkat technique involves applying bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat. Single ikkat has two variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists according to pattern on the warp threads. After that, only, is the weaving done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.

Endearing features of the Pochampally silk saree
The painstaking efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving, including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and well-chosen. No wonder the outcome of the Pochampally saree displays an extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally silk saris with traditional designs, zari borders and elegant pallus with pleasing designs and colourful prints, making it a must-buy for weddings, festivals, traditional functions and even corporate wear.

Fresh feel Dharwad Cotton sarees

Dharwad in Karnataka, India, has sparked interest in cotton creations of a new kind. The cotton yarn is itself coloured and the credit goes to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad with its path breaking experiments that has developed these colour cottons. Grown without genetic modification, these cottons are available in natural colours of brown in light and dark shades and green. This has now made it possible to have cotton commercially on a large scale grown in these colours in other regions of India too where the soil would be favourable. Research is continued for other colours and improving the strength of the cotton and also the overall yield. USA and some countries in Europe are already growing such cotton for colour cotton fabrics.

The Speciality of Dharwad cotton sarees
The pure handloom cotton sarees from Dharwad are soft, fine variety cottons in several natural colours. The Dharwad cotton saree is known for its attractive border and appealing floral print designer pallu or end piece. The introduction of Kasuti the intricate embroidery of the royal courts in Karnataka for cotton fabrics stands out very nicely for the colours chosen, the thread work art and the complex stitching. In addition the borders are very appealing with plain multi-colour or temple design patterns chosen.

The evergreen attraction for the Chanderi saree

Chanderi in M.P., India is traditionally the home of the famed Chanderi sarees, known for the stylistic Bootis and extraordinary threadwork on fine weaves in silk and cotton. The Chanderi saree has been familiar for its mostly light to moderate hues in pleasing patterns and its most attractive feature – the large bootis. With plain to moderately adorned patterns or motifs and small but attractive coloured borders and exquisite pallus with some adornment, Chanderi saris have been popular for the extremely fine texture and sheer quality.

The inspiring variety of the Chanderi cotton saree
It is the single filature method of weaving and the fineness of the yarn used that produces the outcome of a fabric so sheer and so fine in texture, that it is a tribute to the spirit of the weavers who are the authors of this wonderful creation. Enhancing the beauty further is the ‘Booti’, ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of gold, silver or copper coated threads. The Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Booti has been a popular choice since earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different sizes. The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.

A major difference in the making methods is that the ‘Bootis’ of hand-woven Chanderi cotton saris, retain their shape and appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from the ‘Butti’ structure. The same cannot be said for the one woven from synthetic yarn, which tends to lose the initial shape and appearance after some time. Brilliant floral designs adorn the Chanderi cotton saree, and Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body. The elegance, and charm of the Chanderi cotton saree makes it ideal for a variety of occasions. Be it merely casual wear, for office, festivals, social functions or outings, the Chanderi cotton sarees are suitable for almost any occasion.

The luxurious feel of organza silk sarees

Organza a thin weave, sheer fabric, traditionally woven from silk is also woven from synthetic fabric materials like polyester or nylon. Its uses are mainly as smooth feel fabrics of style and in the creation of environment with luxurious feel.
The special feel and appeal of Organza silk
In fabrics organza assumes a feel from very smooth to slightly coarse based on how finely it is woven. Having a matte or slightly lacklustre finish, it is dull in appearance and does not reflect light as well as silk or some other fabrics like chiffon. Organza despite its thin and delicate appearance has quite good strength and is primarily used in the making of evening dresses, sarees, bridal trousseaus, as dress trimmings and inner linings in ready fabrics and drapes like curtains, airy separators for large spaces and such.

A great advantage of organza fabrics is its very good affinity to colours and hence one can find a whole range of apparel of pleasing and varied colours and shades. The fineness of the fabric allows prints and text to be transferred with the use of a computer and allied equipment onto the fabric directly. This quality makes it available for graphical images and many other effects to be superimposed on top of a textured background, creating a magical illusory effect. The balanced plain-weave organza is a fabric woven from thin and continuous filaments of natural fibres as silk, or synthetic fibres as nylon or polyester, or their blends. The threads of warp and weft are of the same size and the number of threads within a given cross sectional area, too are same. The end-result is generally a checker-board appearance.
