The exotic Batik Print Sarees, Batik Cotton Saris Online

Batik is a process using ‘resists’ for making designs on a fabric. The conventional Batik process has a resist or a physical block in some form or the other to prevent desired areas on the fabric from being penetrated by dye. Generally wax is used as a resist in Batik. The block printed areas where resists are in place, come out as un-dyed areas in the dyed fabric and could be coloured differently in repeat wax dye process. This can be repeated several times at the same place or different places with wax-dye process time and again for every subsequent colour change. Batik can be done with various types of dye & wax on cotton, silk and other natural fabrics. Cotton is easy to work with and generally gives best results. Repeated waxing and dyeing over the same place gets newer overlapping results. The idea in multi-layer colouring is to start with lighter shades of the dye and proceed to deeper ones. Here care is taken that wax resist is neither light nor heavy since lighter would mean possible penetration of dye onto resist area and heavy would mean the wax will not resist properly and could cause patches or dye spreads when removed.

The rarer but finer Pen Batik saris
The rarer type of Batik is Pen Batik. Fine designs are made on the fabric using ‘Tjanting’ tools. Molten wax at a certain temperature is carefully put on the design lines with Batik dropper pen.
A lot of care has to be taken since too thin a layer could give way to colour dye through surface cracks. Temperature of the wax is normally kept between 200 and 230 degrees. In the former or conventional method vats or tubs with boiling water are used to melt away the wax. In the latter a small tub with hot water is generally preferred. After the entire resist dyeing process is over, and the wax has melted away in hot water, a neatly dyed plain or designed fabric is available.

The royal Maheshwari saree

About Maheshwari Work
Maheshwar is a town in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh, India, close to Indore. It once had prominence as the capital of Malwa region during the rule of the Holkars. It has been since, a centre of handloom weaving. It is famed for its Maheshwari Sarees, an innovation of a royal queen, Rani Ahalyabai. The Maheshwari Saris are exclusive for their unique designs on silk and cotton fabrics, the fine use of zari and brilliant use of stripes, checks and exquisite floral borders.

The making of a Maheshwari saree goes through five basic stages – designing, procurement, dyeing, separating yarn for warp and weft, weaving and finishing.

Distinctive features of the Maheshwari Saree are its light weight, shiny lustre, and a fine display of colours, with brilliant motifs, an attractive Pallu and a border to match.

The Pallu is particularly noted for the colourful stripes in varied colours such as green, pink, magenta, mauve, violet etc. which lend the fabric a mesmerising look. The border is also adorned by trendy designs and themes such as the Maheshwar fort and similar subjects.

Procurement of raw material is generally from three sources. The Cotton comes from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, the silk from Bangalore, Karnataka and the Zari from Surat, Gujarat. The dyeing of thread involves napthol dye, wet dye and procion dye for cotton fabrics in various combinations. Silk fabrics are dyed with readymade dyes which just need to be mixed and used directly by dipping the fabric in it. Zari is used for the adornment as thread work directly on the fabric or on patch work attached to the saree. The dyeing of thread yarn takes place prior to the weaving of the fabric. After the dyed yarn has dried, the charka is used for separating of warp on large octagonal drums while the weft is prepared by reeling it onto bobbins. The main weaving takes place according to the pre-determined design with warp and weft and the dobby mechanism on the loom helps with supplementary weft in the border pattern weave. Readied fabrics are then cut into the determined lengths, neatly folded and packed.

Chiffon Sarees, Online Designer Chiffon Saris, fancy sarees, printed Chiffon saris online, Unnati Silks

Chiffon is a fabric known for its sheer quality, manufactured so fine, that it is transparent, airy and light on the wearer. From the French meaning ’cloth’, it is made from finely drawn out cotton, silk or synthetic fibres, spun in the balanced plain weave style.

The appeal of a chiffon saree
The fineness of the Chiffon Saree comes from the close placing of a number of fibres per inch in the warp (length wise laid out fibres) and weft (breadth wise arrangement of fibres on the warp). The weaving that then takes place in a close pattern, achieves a net that hardly allows anything to pass through. This is known as fine count. Chiffon Sarees with their extremely fine mesh-like weaving and decorated with beautiful designs and patterns are available in most colours and shades. The greatest advantage of the Chiffon Saree lies in the saree not wrinkling and retaining its neat shape throughout the day. Added to it is the fact that apart from seeing that it being delicate it does not fray, it requires very little care to maintain. Preferred for the comfort and ‘breathing’ quality of the fabric that keeps the body cool and refreshed, not to mention the style statement that it makes, Chiffon Sarees are a boon, for the working woman.

The range of Chiffon sarees
Designer prints, modern floral patterns and embroidery are adopted to adorn the saree and are much preferred wear for office-goers, teachers, college professors and even corporate ladies. More recently introduced, are the eye-catching Rajasthani prints of Lehriya and Bandhini to enhance the appeal of the Chiffon Saree. Lehriya refers to a style of long lines across the body of the saree in brilliant and varied colours.

Bandhini style refers to patterns and colours specific to certain festivals and social occasions. Both are equally popular amongst the fashion conscious. Other versions for the Chiffon Saree online have block prints with opposite coloured pallus and patch border on both sides of the saree, sought out mainly for weddings and grand occasions, while the pure fancy Chiffon Saree with Zari Buttis and elegant Pallu is normally chosen for big functions and parties.

Fine Silky tales of the Dupion Silk Sarees

Dupion known as Dupioni or Douppioni is one of the purest silks in its natural form. The Dupion Silk Saree, a highly wrinkle-resistant fabric where creases form so well that the fabric assumes a crisp and neat look. Dupion silk has that exclusive irregular pattern with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing that lends it uniqueness and is much sought after for fashion, grand occasions and drapery. Apart from the nubby texture, the Dupion Silk Saree is also woven with two threads which create a shimmering effect when the fabric is viewed from certain angles.

What is special about the Dupion Silk saree?
The Dupion Silk Saree has charismatic appeal for its unique pattern of weaving, in the beautiful conversion of a seemingly irregular pattern to a well-intentioned design Its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric that happens when two silkworms in creating their own cocoons, spin them so close to each other that the yarn gets tangled up. The resulting yarn of tangled fibres is taken up in the same form for making the silk thread. Hence the spun thread is thicker, much coarser and has bumps and irregularities in it. The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is comparatively easy to sew and is a highly wrinkle-resistant fabric. Also the material is totally reversible. The creases form so well that the finished fabric assumes a crisp and neat look Karnataka, is one of the main producers of this type of yarn.

Baluchari Sarees, Online Baluchari Saris, Unnati Silks

Pride of Bengal, the Baluchari saree is known for its silk brocade designs, attractive motifs and colour harmony. A Baluchari Sari once worn only by women from the upper class during festive occasions and weddings is today widely worn in all strata of society.
Appeal of the Baluchari saree
Baluchari Saris are made from silk. The appeal of the Baluchari lies in its colour harmony and not contrast, of pattern colours with the colour of the body fabric. Preferred Colours are red, green, yellow, blue and their shades. It is appreciated for its magnificent weave, attractive motifs, brilliant colours and thematic pallus. One of the major themes that adorn the Pallav or Pallu of the Baluchari Saree are mythological stories depicted on the walls of the terra cotta temples that the Malla rulers had built and are located in present day Bengal.

The journey of the Baluchari sari
Historically, with its roots in Bangladesh, one of the Nawabs of Bengal fascinated by the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Baluchar Sari, brought the rudiments of the weaving form from Dhaka(Bangladesh) to Murshidabad (West Bengal) in the eighteenth century. Baluchar village in the district, prominent in its devotion to the practise of this weaving art, flourished, and the Saree got its name. Though patronized by the Malla Dynasty rulers for the continuation of this art, it was affected later by the apathy of the British. Suffering a tremendous decline the Baluchar art almost died. Post-independence revival by a person named Subho Thakur, through the weaving skills of Das, a weaver from Bishnupur and knowledgeable in this art form, restored the glory of this fine weave once again.

The process of making the Baluchari saree
The Baluchar sari making process is intricate. Silkworms bred for the purpose yield the raw material. The yarn processing involves dipping the yarn in a solution of soda and soap, boiling and then dyeing it accordingly. The yarn is stretched in opposite directions to make the yarn crisper. Weaving takes place on jacquard looms with intricate design motifs prepared with the Jacquard arrangement. Quality checks at every step in the various stages of the process have ensured retention in quality of the Baluchari Saree. Fineness, shine and durability have been and remain the hallmarks of the Baluchari Saree. Modern Day trend of the increasing use of organic materials, has found its way into the experimental manufacture of the Baluchari Organic Sari. Fine blends of cotton with both banana fibres and bamboo shoots replace the silk yarn, while acidic dyes have been substituted with dyes made from extracts of fruits, vegetables, leaves, turmeric etc.

The appeal of the Baluchari saree
The Baluchari sari has won the Presidential award on two occasions for its weaving style and has been prominently displayed in international trade fairs. Baluchari Sarees are preferred as soft and comfortable wear, for their fine weave and stylish looks. Some popular themes of today as flower bunches, animals, court scenes of an earlier era, boat etc. adorning the Baluchari Saree make them most attractive and apt for a variety of occasions; be it wedding ceremonies, parties, grand functions, social gatherings or as corporate wear.
