Baluchari Sarees, Online Baluchari Saris, Unnati Silks

Pride of Bengal, the Baluchari saree is known for its silk brocade designs, attractive motifs and colour harmony. A Baluchari Sari once worn only by women from the upper class during festive occasions and weddings is today widely worn in all strata of society.
Appeal of the Baluchari saree
Baluchari Saris are made from silk. The appeal of the Baluchari lies in its colour harmony and not contrast, of pattern colours with the colour of the body fabric. Preferred Colours are red, green, yellow, blue and their shades. It is appreciated for its magnificent weave, attractive motifs, brilliant colours and thematic pallus. One of the major themes that adorn the Pallav or Pallu of the Baluchari Saree are mythological stories depicted on the walls of the terra cotta temples that the Malla rulers had built and are located in present day Bengal.

The journey of the Baluchari sari
Historically, with its roots in Bangladesh, one of the Nawabs of Bengal fascinated by the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Baluchar Sari, brought the rudiments of the weaving form from Dhaka(Bangladesh) to Murshidabad (West Bengal) in the eighteenth century. Baluchar village in the district, prominent in its devotion to the practise of this weaving art, flourished, and the Saree got its name. Though patronized by the Malla Dynasty rulers for the continuation of this art, it was affected later by the apathy of the British. Suffering a tremendous decline the Baluchar art almost died. Post-independence revival by a person named Subho Thakur, through the weaving skills of Das, a weaver from Bishnupur and knowledgeable in this art form, restored the glory of this fine weave once again.

The process of making the Baluchari saree
The Baluchar sari making process is intricate. Silkworms bred for the purpose yield the raw material. The yarn processing involves dipping the yarn in a solution of soda and soap, boiling and then dyeing it accordingly. The yarn is stretched in opposite directions to make the yarn crisper. Weaving takes place on jacquard looms with intricate design motifs prepared with the Jacquard arrangement. Quality checks at every step in the various stages of the process have ensured retention in quality of the Baluchari Saree. Fineness, shine and durability have been and remain the hallmarks of the Baluchari Saree. Modern Day trend of the increasing use of organic materials, has found its way into the experimental manufacture of the Baluchari Organic Sari. Fine blends of cotton with both banana fibres and bamboo shoots replace the silk yarn, while acidic dyes have been substituted with dyes made from extracts of fruits, vegetables, leaves, turmeric etc.

The appeal of the Baluchari saree
The Baluchari sari has won the Presidential award on two occasions for its weaving style and has been prominently displayed in international trade fairs. Baluchari Sarees are preferred as soft and comfortable wear, for their fine weave and stylish looks. Some popular themes of today as flower bunches, animals, court scenes of an earlier era, boat etc. adorning the Baluchari Saree make them most attractive and apt for a variety of occasions; be it wedding ceremonies, parties, grand functions, social gatherings or as corporate wear.

Fine blends of Silk and Cotton - The Handloom Sico sarees

Silk is a natural fibre that has strength, has a shimmery lustrous appearance, is airy, soft and comfortable and keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter. It has great acceptability in absorbing any colour of dye, drapes well and is a great rich-feel fabric that is sought for grand occasions. Cotton is a moderately strong natural fibre that is soft, airy, comfortable, and has no lustre. It too has good acceptability for any colour of dye, has a good comforting feel, but does not drape as well as silk. It also keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter. Silk requires more care and attention as compared to cotton but both fabrics do well under normal conditions of use. Sico is a blend of silk and cotton which assumes the strength of silk and the comparatively better wash resistant qualities compared to silk. The fabric blend possesses the good attributes of both fabrics with a higher tolerance than silk in some respects. Fusion experiments in patterns, designs and other adornments in a host of pleasing colours have yielded laudable creations in Sico fabrics. Sico fabrics are manufactured both by handlooms as well as power looms.

Patola Weaving - logical calculations that bring about stunningly exquisite outcomes

Patola sarees are traditional weaves from Gujarat, India. These expensive fabrics were once worn by royalty and aristocracy.

The Patola weave on sarees
There are two types of patola depending upon the pattern. The Rajkot Patola which is of single ikkat weave and the double ikkat Patan Patola. Patola fabrics are renowned for their colorful diversity and geometrical style. To create a patola fabric, both the warp and weft threads are tie-dyed according to the desired pattern on the final woven fabric. In traditional single ikat, only one of them is dyed. The bundles of thread are knotted before being dyed, so that the points where the bundles are tied, the thread resists the color. The weaving is done on traditional hand looms, and vegetable dyes are traditionally used. Patola weaves generally have motifs like animals, flowers, human figures and birds in the basic design. Current trends have geometrical designs.

Single versus double ikkat Patola weave
Single ikkat fabrics have adornments of kundan work and zardozi in addition. The fabric texture tends to be heavy with the ornate work done on it. Borders are adorned with zari and patch borders with warm colors and rich motifs. The double ikkat fabrics generally have motifs of parrots, flowers, elephants and dancing figures, geometric and floral designs. Fabrics with plain dark colored body and motifs of women and birds are treated as special variety of Patola. Nowadays prints of traditional patola patterns are used as prints on designer silk and art silk sarees.

Kalamkari – exquisite prints from elementary hand techniques

Kalamkari or Qalamkari is hand painted or block printed textile. It is derived from the Persian ‘drawing with a pen’. There are two styles in India. The Srikalahasthi style which is based on themes of religious hangings, temple engravings, scrolls, deities, scenes from epics etc. based on the influence of Hindu rulers of the Malla dynasty. The Machilipatnam style based on Islam influence of the Mughals and evolved with themes of flora, fauna and nature chosen.

The essential features of Kalamkari
Using Natural dyes mostly, hand block printing is used for the printing of the fabric and the pen used for the finer details and inner filling of colours.

The elaborate process of Kalamkari
The initial weaving of the fabric completed, is when the Kalamkari process takes over. The cotton fabric is immersed in a fine mix of myrobalan ( a resin) and cow’s milk to provide the adhesion of colours. By soaking it for an hour a unique gloss is achieved. It is after this that the finer lines and details are drawn with a bamboo stick styled like a pen soaked in fermented jiggery and water. After this the vegetable dyes are applied. The application of each colour done, the fabric is washed. This leads to the fabric being washed a number of times to see that the colours have adhered and do not spread.

For extra colouring effects substances like cow dung, seeds, crushed flowers and plants are also used. The richness of the colours and the use of natural dyes has slowly given way to lesser vibrancy on account of the use of chemical dyes which are easily and abundantly available.
