Pochampally silk saree - Devotion and dedication undimmed over time

Pochampally, in Telangana, India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand of sarees, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The exquisite finish of the saree comes through the dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique.
The special technique of the Pochampally silk weave
The Ikkat technique involves applying bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat. Single ikkat has two variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists according to pattern on the warp threads. After that, only, is the weaving done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.

Endearing features of the Pochampally silk saree
The painstaking efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving, including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and well-chosen. No wonder the outcome of the Pochampally saree displays an extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally silk saris with traditional designs, zari borders and elegant pallus with pleasing designs and colourful prints, making it a must-buy for weddings, festivals, traditional functions and even corporate wear.

Enjoying the shimmer and shine of Raw silk sarees

The love for silk
Silk is a natural fibre shiny and lustrous, traditionally accepted as the finest and purest in yarns, hence considered as the fabric to be worn for religious occasions and traditional festivals in India. A prevailing custom, followed till date, its look and feel, its strength and lack of creases make it the preferred fabric for Indian women. Added to it are the endearing qualities of softness, smooth feel, warm and comfortable in the appropriate climatic conditions. Silk be of any form or variety, these natural properties are common to all.

The appeal of raw silk sarees
Raw silk sarees are liked by Indian women for the simple reason that there is a slightly dull to faint lustre that gives it a special look. Because of its slightly rough texture compared to pure silk, the colors on the saree assume a strange but liked vitality. The already grand looking saree is further given touch of elegance and captivating beauty by thematic prints, lovely bootis and other such decorative features on the pallu or end piece.

The characteristic raw silk
Raw silk is a filament yarn from which the gummy substance that comes with the silken yarn has not been separated. This sericin or sticky substance is removed by putting the cocoons in boiling water so that the gum separates out. The filament yarn is too fine to be woven directly. Hence the uneven strands are reeled in by hand and uniform strands are formed to make it suitable for weaving. Raw silk is of light biege to yellow colour.
Since the yarn is not even and lacks lustre, raw silk weaving produces a slightly dull and coarser fabric than one from pure silks. Raw silk threads are washed in soapy water to get some shine and then dyeing is done. Hand reeled threads can be combined to desired thickness for thin and light fabrics and for slightly heavier fabrics. Raw silk can be dyed with both natural and artificial dyes.

Buy raw silk sarees from Unnatisilks
There have been good fusion experiments on display in the exclusive raw silk collection of sarees till date. You have the eye-catching portion of the fabric, the pallu, subject to floral prints combined with embroidery, floral designer prints with checks or abstract patterns. You have dupion ghicha raw silk sarees in awesome colors, with the correct combination of field and borders with good designer prints on the pallu or end piece. The lustrous offerings with the zari borders make for rich lush fabrics that would do very well for any occasion.

Fine Silky tales of the Dupion Silk Sarees

The Dupion Silk Saree has a charismatic appeal in its unique pattern of weaving, with Nature guiding tradition on the design.

Dupion is also known as Dupioni or Douppioni. Dupion Silk is one of the purest silks in its natural form. It is easily distinguished from other forms of silk by its inherent property of lumps or silk knots within the yarn fabric.

This happens when two silkworms in creating their own cocoons, spin them so close to each other that the yarn gets tangled up. The yarn of tangled fibres is taken up in the same form in making the silk thread. The spun thread is thick, coarse and has bumps and irregularities.

The inherent qualities of the Dupion Silk Saree makes it suitable for dyeing the yarn to any colour, is  comparatively easy to sew, and is highly wrinkle-resistant. The creases on the fabric form so well that it assumes a crisp and neat look. The uneven weave with nubs (lumps of yarn) showing at regular intervals form an unconscious pattern indicative of an underlying design.

Dupion silk does not have stretch ability hence measurements would have to be exact before cutting out patterns. Also, the texture is not as fine as other silks and edges have a tendency of unravelling.

Double cocoons are usually reeled on the Charakha, or hand-spinning wheel. But the Dupion Reeling Machine has also been introduced and these days they are also used. Karnataka, is one of the main producers of this type of yarn.

The Dupion Silk Saree is woven with two threads apart from the nubs which create a shimmering effect when the fabric is viewed from certain angles.

Dupion Silk Sarees are low priced when compared to pure silk sarees. With adornments of pearls, beads, kundans and sequins they are much-preferred wear for wedding ceremonies.

Exclusive Dupion Silks with Bagru block prints, woven in the Bandhani tie-dye style are most fascinating. The Fancy Dupion Silk Saree having embroidered patch borders is also most charming.

Latest trends of block circle and diamond prints on the Dupion Silk Saree with printed border and designer pallu to match, is definitely a fashion fabric for college parties, corporate conferences and traditional festivals.

Zari buttis on the Dupion Silk sari have a resham border that render a beautiful sight. They are most suitable for wedding functions, as bridal attire and for social get-togethers.

The enchanting spreads of the Chanderi Silk saree

Chanderi in M.P., India is traditionally the home of the famed Chanderi sarees, known for the stylistic Bootis and extraordinary threadwork on fine weaves in silk and cotton. The Chanderi silk saree has been familiar for its mostly light to moderate hues in pleasing patterns and its most attractive feature – the large bootis. With plain to moderately adorned patterns or motifs and small but attractive coloured borders and exquisite pallus with some adornment, Chanderi Silks have been popular for the extremely fine texture and sheer quality.

The charm and allure of the Chanderi Silk Saree
It is the single filature method of weaving and the fineness of the yarn used that produces the outcome of a fabric so sheer and so fine in texture, that it is a tribute to the spirit of the weavers who are the authors of this wonderful creation. Enhancing the beauty further is the ‘Booti’, ‘Butti’ or motif, which is an interlaced, hand-woven, shape, consisting of gold, silver or copper coated threads. The Asharfi Butti, or Gold Coin shaped Booti has been a popular choice since earlier times, though the pure gold or silver used in its making has given way to tested Zari, which is woven from synthetic yarn by needles of different sizes. The bigger version of the ‘Butti’ is popularly known as ‘Butta’.

A major difference in the making methods is that the ‘Bootis’ of hand-woven Chanderi saris, retain their shape and appearance throughout the life of the fabric, with no thread coming out from the ‘Butti’ structure.
The same cannot be said for the one woven from synthetic yarn, which tends to lose the initial shape and appearance after some time. Brilliant floral designs or batik, adorn the Chanderi silk saree, and Buttis once only hand-woven on the fabric, have been replaced by gold-printed ‘Butti’prints on the silk fabric body.

Buy Chanderi silk saris online from Unnati Silks
The elegance, and the grandeur that the Chanderi Saree lends to the wearer, makes it ideal for special occasions, like marriages, weddings, festivals, parties and social functions. It could also serve as corporate-wear.

The Chanderi Silk saris at Unnati display an extraordinary array of Designer prints and neon varieties. There are dark coloured block prints with light and medium multi-coloured fancy borders and designer pallu. Sober to subdued colours with light coloured eye-catching motifs that sensationalize. Half & half sarees in matching shades of pastel colours and light-hued motifs with neon borders to heighten the effect. A whole lot of bright and tantalizing neons on display with stunning colour mixes. In fact the wedding Chanderi silk sarees are very eye-filling and exciting, with splendid Bootis and elegant attach patch borders with embroidery to complement.

The extraordinary traditional skill of Dabu Printing

Dabu Printing is an age old ethnic tradition that has stood the test of time as a unique way of dyeing and printing. Practised mostly in Rajasthan, it has churned out extraordinary fabrics of brilliant colours and mind-blowing designs that have left modern pundits dumbstruck.

The seemingly ordinary process of Dabu Printing
Dabu printing is a unique art form. This mud-resist hand-block printing is practiced mostly in the state of Rajasthan, India. Cotton is received in large bundles for dyeing and printing. Based on the order, the bundles are opened out and different sizes are measured and cut based on the fabric. Sarees would have 7 metres, dupattas 2.5 metres and so on. Each fabric is pre-washed and soaked for about 24 hours to remove starch, oil, dust, or any other contaminants which could prevent proper dyeing and printing. Then the fabric is block printed with dabu, and laid to dry in the sun. Once the mud is dry, the fabric is immersed in a dye, and again laid to dry in the sun. The process could sometimes be repeated for repeated dabu printing on top of the dyed fabric to create further layers of resist and again dye it in darker shades of the dye. Finally the fabric is washed to remove all traces of the dabu mud, revealing the resist area to be the original colour. The fabric is again dried in the sun and is ready to be packaged and sold.

Dabu Prints – an eco-friendly tradition
Dabu printed sarees undergo a rigorous process that involves a lot of not so easily available and costly natural dyes and vegetable pastes. Printed motifs like boota (corn stalk), surajmukhi or sunflower, animals and geometrical patterns are popular subjects. Pure cotton, pure silk, chiffon, crepe, georgette and super net saris are the different fabrics that have good results with Dabu prints.

Buy Dabu Printed sarees online at Unnati Silks
Unnatisilks has experimented with dabu prints mainly on handloom cottons of specific varieties since Dabu Prints produce astounding results on cotton handlooms. Take the Rajasthani cotton handlooms. Earthy and dark hues with pleasantly attractive floral patterns adorn these Dabu Prints sarees. There are the Venkatagiri cotton handlooms in dark shades that have stripes design, a lot of striking geometrical patterns like the zigzag pattern, huge floral bootis and designer pallus. There are also the lighter shades that have plenty of fresh floral and checks patterns as Dabu Prints with mesmerizing designer pallus. There are other cotton handloom varieties also that feature Dabu prints.

Block Printing/ Brush Dye Prints – Traditional Rajasthani skilled art on fabrics

Bagru, a village near Jaipur, is an international hub for block printed fabrics. The century old traditional art of block printing, unique and painstaking in its nature has been marvellously sustained by the dedicated efforts of the local Chipa community.

Bagru is a village in Rajasthan, very close to Jaipur the capital city of the state, on the Jaipur-Ajmer Road.

It is famous for its unique Bagru Prints.
Bagru Prints are known for their unique use of Natural Dyes and Hand Block Printing.
Wooden Hand Blocks are blocks of wood with holding grips on one side and a flat smooth surface or pressing side with design engraved on it. Designs engraved are transferred to the fabric by filling colours in the etched cavities and giving a sharp hit to the pressed block on the cloth.

This tradition of block printing is practised by the Chhipa community in the village and they have been doing so since the last century. They are also adept in the art of preparation and use of vegetable dyes, and indigo dyeing. Despite changing trends in the colouring of the fabric, the community has continued the use of natural dyes mostly in earthy shades for their printing work.

Initially the entire quantity of cotton cloth or fabric, normally a sizeable bundle received, has to be cut in desired sizes. This is based on the nature of the fabric; saree, bedspread, dupatta or whatever, according to the individual measurements provided and in the numbers specified.

The two-fold process of dyeing and block printing then begins.
The fabric is pre-washed and soaked for several hours together to allow for dirt, oil and other contaminants to separate out. It starts with the smearing of the fabric or cloth too be dyed, with Fuller’s Earth, brought from the riverside and then dipping it in turmeric water. Fuller’s Earth washed away imparts a creamish colour to the fabric.

Then it is soaked in the solution of Harda or fruit of the myrobalan plant and dried in the sun which gives it a yellowish cream hue. This is a unique feature of Bagru Prints and the process is instrumental for the colour fastness of the Print dyes that would be applied.

The fabric is then printed with natural dyes or colorants which are derived from plants and animals. Different blocks with different colours are used for the outer, the outline and the inner filling in the design. Incidentally a majority of the natural dyes are from plants and hence Bagru Prints are also referred to as ‘eco-friendly’ prints.

The primary colours of red, green, blue and yellow are available from the following substances.  Blue is available from Indigo, with desired shade got from increasing the concentration or diluting it. Green is available through indigo mixed with pomegranate. Red is through the Madder Root, while yellow is from turmeric.

After the fabric is completely block printed it is dried and later put in vats of boiling water containing alum and other agents. The solution with fabric in it is constantly stirred to prevent sticking to any portion of the vessel. The process is complete with the fabric being washed again to remove excess colour and any other sticking impurities.

Hand Block Printing using these natural colours is done mostly on fabrics with large canvas such as sarees, quilts, bed covers, though pillow covers, turbans and other smaller items of cloth also are taken up. Themes are generally floral prints, geometrical shapes etc.

Bagru prints are done on off-white, ivory white or beige background sarees. Motifs of circular designs, flowers, fruits, birds create allure on fabrics like crepe, georgette, chiffon, silk, cotton. Exotic Bagru prints are quite popular on south handloom cotton saris woven with zari borders.
Some Block Printed Sarees that are seen in the market are delightful creations.

The Designer Dupioni Silk Sari with big and bold Bagru prints accentuated with zari embroidery, and mirror work is an enchanter. It would serve well for functions, marriages and special occasions.

The Rajasthani Silk Saree of ethnic Bagru with big and bold motifs and geometrical prints on the pallu is an eye-catcher. This stylish wear is apt for college parties, corporate office and family get-togethers.

The Fancy Georgette Crepe Silk Saris of floral patterns and embellished with kundans, sequins and beads, looks very gorgeous. It would be a good choice for festivals, grand parties and special invites.
